MUSIC SCHOOL STUDENT INTERVIEW

Julia is a student from Brazil that goes to Duquesne University's Music School. Some ESL students decided to interview her to get a better understanding of the Duquesne's music program

So why did you choose to study music?

I think I chose to study music because honestly, it is what I really love to do. And I wouldn't choose anything else.

Oh, so you began studying music when you were young?

No, no I started, I always loved music singing, but I started to study music when I was much older, I was already 17 when I first started to study music.

I see, who is your favorite musician for you?

My favorite musician, wow! I absolutely love Pavarotti as a singer and as a performer. I'd say he's my favorite musician in the classical aspect, but I also love jazz. It's difficult for me to choose a  favorite artist.

What do you play?

Voice

How many years did you study music for?

I mean I started having voice lessons when I was 14. Like really, really learning I was 17 yeah, just like with technique in starting to learn music theory at 17 in high school.

What is your goal for music?

My goal for music is to see myself as a musician, which means: “what can I offer to the music world?” I want to offer something different, and I am honestly trying to discover if I really want to do classical music or jazz. I might want to do both, but find a very unique way of doing each one of them. I don’t want to become a musician that does the same as every other musician, I want to offer something different.

What's your favorite course in music school?

I love my private lessons, that’s where I learned the most. I know I like the more interesting classes, yet there have been some theoretical classes for a while now, but I do enjoy to listen to the orchestra and go to jazz sessions.

How did you decide follow music?

I think music brings more joy and satisfaction, so this is really what I want to pursue, everything else is just not as enjoyable.

So at the beginning of your study of music, was jazz more attractive than classical?

I think jazz is more relatable to my world, like at home it was more accessible in some ways, but I think it's important to start with classical music to have the technique and then you can explore everything else after that. Yes

Can you play other instruments?

I can play the piano a little bit and the guitar, but I wouldn't say I can perform by myself, you know it's all going somewhere, piano and singing, though similarly to jazz.
